Lifesaving Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is not yet complete. We'll add more soon. Please share what works in your group. The more you share, the more you help other teams.

Casualty Recognition

Before you start any rescue you want to know the status of any casualties you come across. Discuss with your team the four most likely casualties. Work out the priorites in a rescue incident.

Land Based Rescues

Practice reaching rescues and rope throwing skills with your team. A good time for throwing the rope and pulling in a casualty over 10 meters distance would be about 30 seconds.

Water Rescues

Your own safety is of utmost importance. We don't want to add you to the list of casualties. Only as a last resort should you enter the water and tow a casualty back to safety.

Rescue Towing

There are many different tows. Some have regional variations. Discuss and practice the main rescue tows. Compare results and work out which tow works best for a given casualty.

Lifting the Casualty

If you come across an unconscious casualty you may have to lift them out of the water. Whenever possible, do this with a helper to avoid injuring yourself. Practice the assisted lift out until you can do it efficiently without causing harm.

Resuscitation

You can only delay the inevitable, but if you can give life support for the few minutes until the ambulance arrives, you could save a life.

Get a good book on resuscitation and proceed with great care and discipline. Many rescuers mess up on resuscitation, but if you do it right, you can make a big difference.
